Rich floras from the upper Carboniferous provide an excellent opportunity to investigate vegetation development under contrasting hydrological conditions in the vast wetland environments of the Saar-Nahe basin (Germany). Large quantities of specimen from six different sites (Camphausen, Velsen, Friedrichsthal, Göttelborn, Ensdorf and Reisbach) reveal shifting dominance of typical elements such as lycopsids, filicopsids, pteridosperms, sphenopsids and cordaites. We interpret the differences in assemblage composition as vegetation response to ambient hydrological conditions within the Saar-Nahe basin.
