First evidence for the PETM in the nearshore coastal record of Suriname, along the tropical west Atlantic coastline

The Suriname coastline, as part of the Guianas is characterized by westward migrating mudflats formed by Amazon River sediments. In this study we did palaeoenvironmental and vegetation analysis of the Suriname coast. We analysed samples from the nearshore Powisi-01 well and determined the palynological and geochemical composition of these sediments. Two main palynological zones and six subzones were identified. The lower zone consists of palynomorphs of Late Paleocene to earliest Eocene age occur, including palms and other angiosperms. The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM), is also detected in this section part. A barren section follows, that is overlain by Early Miocene, and Middle/Late Miocene to Pleistocene sediments. Palynological diversity is high throughout the well section, and pointing at a tropical lowland flora in the hinterland. Geochemical compositions further indicate that sediments are mainly of cratonic provenance, with the top at c. 200 mbsl of the section presenting a mixed sediment signal of Andean/Amazon, Orinoco, and Amazon craton-derived sediments. Regional studies indicate that Andean sediments likely reached the Guiana coastline during the Late Miocene, but more research is required to determine exactly when the Amazon River began influencing the Guianas coastline.
