Reading for Democracy with Prof. Laura Bieger

This workshop, led by Prof. Laura Bieger (Ruhr-Universität Bochum), engages with her recent book Reading for Democracy (Heidelberg: Metzler, 2024). It is aimed at doctoral candidates and advanced MA students.

Focusing on selected excerpts from the book, the workshop explores the question of whether and how literature can be understood as a political practice. Topics include reading as a form of political engagement, the role of literature in the public sphere, and the relational dynamics between texts, readers, and institutions. 

Participants will engage in close reading and discussion of pre-circulated materials. The workshop is designed as an interactive format encouraging critical exchange.
