Attention for giftedness has shifted more and more from determining who is gifted (and who is not) to identifying needs and talents. We seem to believe that when we notice talents, we should also develop them. There are also numerous theories and models that explain how talents can best be developed. The question why we develop talents, however, does not seem to be up for debate. Not among parents, not among teachers, and not among researchers. These are interesting assumptions, especially since they are not mentioned simultaneously and seem to be mutually exclusive. But are they really? And is that justified? Let’s find an answer to a question that does not seem to have been asked before: what is the purpose of talent development? And what does the answer mean for the talents we develop within our classrooms?
