The Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Münster cordially invites to the award ceremony of the honorary doctorate degree to Prof. Dr. David W. C. MacMillan.
David MacMillan received his PhD in chemistry in 1996 at the University of California, Irvine. After his postdoctoral studies at Harvard University, he startet his independent scientific carrier in 1988 at the University of California, Berkeley. In 2000 he moved to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), until he accepted his current position as A. Barton Hepburn Professor of Chemistry at Princeton University in 2006.
David MacMillan‘s research interests focus on (asymmetric) catalysis. He is a leading scientist and pioneer in the fields of organocatalysis, photoredox catalysis and their applications in proximity labelling and total synthesis. In 2021, together with Benjamin List, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for introducing organicatalysis as a novel, widely applicable synthetic tool.
The Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy of the University of Münster awards Professor David MacMillan the honorary doctorate degree in recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions in photoredox catalysis. We honor his leading role in promoting this concept from a handful of examples to a broadly applicable tool in organic synthesis.
